Phone Consultation

We are happy to offer a free 20-minute phone call to discuss what your unique concerns are and how our services may be able to help. It gives you an opportunity to learn more about what 1-1 sessions may offer you, how the online programs may meet your needs, and how our treatment options may align with your goals! It can also help you get a feeling if the coach may be a good fit for you.

Assessment

If this is your first time working with a coach here at TBC, you will be starting with an assessment. This is not necessary if you plan to only do the self-led online DBT programs (at least for the first couple programs). That being said, we make sure the assessment is helpful and informative! Every client who completes an assessment will get a written report, or "Growth Plan", on the findings and recommendations for next steps! Even if you choose to do only the online programs, the assessment can act as a guideline for which DBT skills may apply to which symptoms, so you get the most out of the course!

The assessment will be a mix of the HAPS questionnaire, and an hour-long appointment. The Hoevelmann Assessment of Present Symptoms (HAPS) focuses on the symptoms you have experienced in the past 2-4 weeks, and what your main concerns are. In most cases, it will be completed on your own time before the assessment appointment, and will help to guide the conversation. The actual appointment will be a more casual conversation and aim to narrow in on your treatment goals. The more open and honest you are during the appointment, the more effective the results and Growth Plan will be!

Growth Appointment

After the assessment, if you want 1-1 support, you can book a one-hour Growth Appointment! These appointments will be based on your Growth Plan, and your input on the Growth Plan, of course! Typically, an hour or so before your appointment you will be emailed an outline of what will be discussed during the session. DBT skills can be complicated, so it is helpful to have a copy of the skills written in front of you to follow along and make notes! There will always be some review of how your week has been, and, after the second appointment, the conversation will start with a review of skills practice since the last session. For the most part, these appointments are down-to-business skills training.

Supplemental Sessions

For clients looking for more support, especially between the first few Growth Appointments, we offer short 30-minute supplemental appointments. The focus of these sessions could be applying the skills learned, troubleshooting issues that come up, or engaging in honest conversation about your mental health concerns. Talk to your coach to decide how supplemental sessions might be helpful for you!

Maintenance

Once you have completed all the planned skills training from your Growth Plan, you may want to continue with support to keep you on track and hitting your goals! Maintenance appointments can be either 30 or 60 minutes, depending on the level of support you feel you need. Of course, once you feel confident with the skills you have, you may want to do a re-assessment to figure out how to best tackle your next set of goals!

We are looking to start a Zoom Maintenance Group for those who have completed an in-depth DBT skills program, through hospitals or community organizations. If you are interested, let us know, as we will start it when we have enough interested people!
